The first time I seen or heard REV rhyme was at a show that Psyko South and THC were supposed to open up for Cappadonna at Studio A…

Cappa never showed so it was up to us to keep the people who came to show love entertained. Besides the climate of haterism that was emanating from a certain corner of the club the thing that stuck out the most about the night was this accapella Rev dropped towards the end of the THC set. Buddy got a presence on the stage that is second to NONE, you can feel his frustration about everything through the speakers. Its that frustration that seems to power and inspire Rev’s latest opus “The Hearest” Let it Burn 2.5.

The disc intro goes completely left from the normal shit talking, we gonna take over the game braggadocio followed by a 24 bar verse. Rev starts out his joint with a audio cinematic skit that follows him walking down the street drunk, getting passed by chicks, while singing “Nooobody knows the trouble I’ve seen” This simple musing pretty much sums up the entire disc, exactly what an intro is supposed to do! (rappers take notes!)

Dont be fooled by the photoshop cover, and fuck what you heard this is not a your typical Dade County mixtape. I dont even like calling it a mixtape but some will insist because some joints only run for a minute or so, but the disc MOVES like an album.

After the intro Rev sets things off with the track “Whats It For” where he wonders to himself what his motivation should be for getting behind the mic. Lines like “If i did it for the money mufuckas would want shit from me I couldn’t trust nobody” give a simple but eloquent insight into what truly goes on inside the mind of an EMCEE (not a rapper) trying to make it under them Magic City Lights.

The next surprise/standout comes on the track “I Like Your Flow” featuring A Lexx and Matik. This is kind of laid back vibe that you would expect an emcee like REV to sound out of his box on but the opposite actually happens and the listener comes to realize that Rev does not have a box that you could easily put him in. This is heard futher in the transition to the next track, rather than having the mellow sounding chick joint be out of place on a disc full of real shit it moves more like a vaction from reality that Rev paints.

Looking at the back cover one is instantly drawn to the fact that this somewhat unknown new comer to the national scene has a track with none other than Miami Hip Hop Heavyweight Rick Ross. Normally when you see these tracks on mixtapes the “feature” is a sample for the chorus or a jacked accapella blended badly into some fruity loops abomination. Not the case here though. Rev goes in with Ross and Miami underground kang UB of THC and doesn’t miss a step alongside the vets.

This is the second artist out of the Dub P pack that I have had the pleasure of reviewing…I can only hope Fuse and them bois keep blessing me cause so far they knocking em out the park.

Cant judge a book by its cover, or a mixtape for that matter. That was my final thought after listening to “Dat Mogly Tape” for the first time. Upon first look some, like myself, may make the assumption that this tape is gonna be more of the same gangsta type braggin bout rims the rapper don’t ride on and dope the rapper don’t sell. So you can only imagine my surprise when what came out of my speakers was the best product to come from a local emcee (with emphasis on the EMCEE) in I don’t know how long. Off rip Mogly get its in!!!

The first track “Let’s Fly” comes in smooth with its synthesized keys. (no intro, no shit talking “DJ”, just music, good look!) Mogly’s swagger sweats through the speakers and his mission statement is clear “Youngin coming up I got highs for the low” “Let’s fly like smoke, these haters fly like coach”. Don’t get it twisted though, cocaine, guns, and pain play a major role on this mixtape that moves like an action movie but it is Mogly who is the star as he explains on “Take Money” “Im deep wit dat white bitch but I don’t sleep wit dat white bitch/keep her in the kitchen, whippin, beatin dat white bitch/ you be needin that white bitch, feedin that white bitch/ one albums’ like 5 bricks, im leavin dat white bitch” On the same track you really begin to feel Mogly’s struggle as he raps “nobody wanna give me so I took my chance/ I’m walkin in the courthroom don’t pull up my pants”.

While Mogly provides witty lyricism in excess throughout the tape it is simple direct lines like these that really give you insight as to the true character of the emcee. The track “Hustle Go” is a smooth head nod joint where the listener begins to see the motivation for Mogly’s lifestyle. The emcee is unapologetic on the hook as he rhymes “I don’t know where my hustle gon take me but im ridin/ and I don’t know if the end the hustle gon break me but im firin/ and at the end the lord figure out that he wanna take me, then im dyin”. The nonchalant manner in which these lyrics are delivered in is chilling, this is not your everyday MC Young Cash Getta rapping empty words about bricks and guns. Mogly continues to open up to the listener with bars like “Im kind of sad and depressed but no tears on my face/ I’m smiling at death he steer clear of my way/ facin a couple years up state aint no fear on my face/ so many years in a cage the judge aint even hearing my case” By now I hope you begining to realize the whole mixtape is quotable.

I was also very surprised to hear Mogly kill classic tracks like Jay Z’s “A Million”, Reakwon’s “Wu Gambinos”, and “Rainy Days”, normally when unknowns hop on tracks like that I cant make it through the first 8 bars but Moglys southern swag and flawless flow make these dated classics next school favorites. Like I said in the begining hands down THE BEST product to come out of the South Florida hip hop scene since, since…….I dont know, download this and try to tell me I’m wrong though! If you know bout some better music put me on, but for now I’m fucking wit Mogly!
